The priest, Genius, instructs the poet, Amans, in the art of both courtly and Christian love. In writing the Confessio Amantis, John Gower pioneered the use of English as a literary language. Commissioned by King Richard II, it is a compendium of stories held together by a frame narrative.

He is remembered primarily for three major works, the Mirroir de l'Omme, Vox Clamantis, and Confessio Amantis, three long poems written in French, Latin, and English respectively, which are united by common /5.
